Sitting Congress MP Francisco Sardinha stated on Wednesday that the delay in announcing the Congress party candidate for the South Goa seat would not hinder his campaign, as he has already begun campaigning in the constituency.

Responding to inquiries about his chances of receiving renomination from the Congress for South Goa and the delay in candidate announcements, Sardinha indicated that he has received indications that his name has been approved by the Congress Screening Committee panel for the South Goa seat.

“Last time too, the party had set in motion the process to finalize the candidates just few days before the election,” the MP said. "I have been moving around the constituency to inaugurate and launch development projects in various segments of South Goa. My campaign for the seat has already started and I am only waiting for the party’s decision on the confirmation of the ticket,” he said.

The four-time MP’s name along with that of ex-GPCC Chief Girish Chodankar and Capt Viriato Fernandes has been shortlisted by the Congress screening panel in New Delhi on Tuesday. The Congress Central Election Committee will now meet either during the weekend or early next week to finalise the candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats in Goa.

Meanwhile, welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s launching of the upgradation of the Vasco and Sanvordem railway stations, besides infrastructure projects, including road overbridges and underpasses in Goa, the South Goa MP reiterated his demand for the scrapping of the double tracking project on the Majorda-Vasco section.

“The infrastructure launched by the Prime Minister will benefit the tourists, but the track doubling project is only meant for the transportation of coal from Vasco to the neighbouring states. People in Vasco and other villages are complaining of acute coal pollution,” he said.
