Chandor’s cry: A village fights for its soul

Close on the heels of the rally at Guirdolim opposing double tracking, now Chandor — Goa’s historic gem and once the capital of the Kadamba dynasty — faces a deeper threat: a sprawling 21,000 square metre mega housing project that could irreversibly alter its identity. This isn’t just about buildings. It’s about the soul of a village. The proposed Rs 3 crore units are priced far beyond the reach of locals, clearly designed to attract outside buyers. Such unchecked urbanisation risks demographic imbalance, strains infrastructure, and sidelines native voices. It’s criminal to destroy villages under the guise of development. Chandor today finds itself at the crossroads. Beneath its serene surface, the pressures of speculative development and political neglect threaten to unravel its social fabric. Residents must now channel that same resilience. A united legal challenge, grounded in the principle of carrying capacity, could be a powerful step forward. This fight must not remain isolated. It should spark a wider Goan movement, where villages across the state join hands to protect their heritage, environment, and way of life. The panchayat must act swiftly and issue a stop-work notice.
