Rising IIT suicides demand urgent action

The rising trend of suicides among IIT students is a deeply disturbing issue that must be addressed urgently. Education Ministers should order fair inquiries to uncover the causes and ensure corrective measures.

Educational institutions are meant to nurture learning and provide a safe environment, not create fear and despair. While some students may struggle with academic pressure, they should receive counseling and be guided toward paths that align with their strengths. Every individual has unique abilities, and students must be encouraged to focus on their talents rather than punished for their weaknesses.

Suicide can never be an option. We must build resilience, inner strength, and hope, even during life’s toughest moments. Teachers play a crucial role in supporting students by guiding them, easing anxieties, and offering encouragement.

If harassment by faculty members is driving students to despair, strict action must be taken. Institutions should never tolerate such behavior. Having taught for 35 years, I have seen both insensitive teachers who create undue stress and inspiring ones who guide students like true mentors. We need more of the latter.
