The Goa government should install CCTV cameras, including AI-powered systems, across all local roads in the state to improve surveillance and traffic management. The initiative aims to enhance safety, reduce accidents, and curb illegal activities such as theft, murder, and rape. It is good to hear that the Transport Department, in collaboration with the PWD, is installing AI-based traffic cameras at 92 locations across Goa. These cameras will operate 24/7 and are aimed at catching violations such as triple-riding, wrong lane driving, and vehicle-related offences.
The government should consider installing CCTV cameras on all village roads, especially near schools, with preliminary approval from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Panaji city already has hundreds of cameras operating under the Integrated Command and Control Centre, which has helped solve over 400 cases. This is a positive step and should be continued. Tenders should be floated every year, with maintenance contracts awarded to empanelled vendors for the installation and upkeep of CCTV surveillance on all village roads in Goa as soon as possible. Goa should aim for stronger safety and minimal crime.
