The Bread and Breakfast (BnB) accommodations, which were supposed to attract more tourists and thereby provide more revenue to the State, have become a challenge because the BnB business exploded when local tourists got influenced by the idea and decided to become investors. Social media influencers, hungry for views, marketed the idea, and some collaborated with real estate sharks. What followed is: Real estate exploitation, with the entry of real estate brokers, builders, land grabbers, and constructions, funnelled corruption that spiraled land conversions, deforestation, and lethargy in governance. The inventory of BnBs created market saturation, compromising prices resulting in poor occupancy in accommodations like hotels and resorts. Low-price accommodations attracted poor-spending tourists. Since many BnBs provide kitchens and pantries, the type of tourists who use BnBs do not use restaurant services but buy from markets and cook at the accommodations, impacting inflation. Budget tourists are usually groups of men who visit Goa for the wrong reasons, like liquor, prostitution, and casinos. The impact of this has become visible with rising road accidents, unruly behaviour towards women, and the loss of quality tourists, like families and international visitors.
