June 10, is celebrated as Portugal’s National Day. It also marks the death anniversary of Luis de Camoes, Portugal’s greatest poet, who passed away in 1580. The day is also observed by Portuguese communities across the world.

In Portugal, the day is celebrated with a grand parade, attended by the President. Luis de Camoes is best known for writing ‘Os Lusíadas’, a famous epic poem with 8,816 lines—one of the longest poems ever written.

Goa shares a deep connection with Portugal, which ruled the region from 1510 for about 450 years. Many Goans have benefited from the option of Portuguese nationality, granted by the Portuguese government. This has helped Goans find better job opportunities, especially in the United Kingdom.

Portuguese is spoken by around 265 million people globally. This day is a proud moment for all who share this heritage. Coincidentally, Portugal also won the UEFA Nations League football final against Spain in a 2-2 draw, winning 5-3 on penalties—making the celebration even more special. Goans should remember this day with respect and gratitude.
