Applying the brakes on rising deaths in road accidents

JERRY FERNANDES, Saligao | MAY 29, 2025, 10:32 PM IST

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant while speaking at the launch of the Driver Sensitisation Tab Lab at the RTO office near KTC Bus Terminus, Panaji on Tuesday has said that at least one person dies everyday in a road accident in the State, which adds up to over 365 deaths every year. On the one hand, government itself is seen allowing individuals to set up hundreds of bars/whole-sale liquor outlets every few metres in the state in the name of wooing domestic tourists & promoting tourism in Goa. On the other hand the same government is still not seen doing anything to improve the public transport system, especially in villages, encouraging more people to use their two-wheelers to cause road congestion everywhere and simply going on constructing four-lane roads without bothering to teach people how to drive their vehicles on these roads? Well, the government should first try to put some fully computerised system in place for those wanting to learn to drive, on the lines of all the highly developed foreign countries and then dream of saving innocent people from dying in road accidents.
