Daily road fatalities give Goa dubious distinction

It is shocking to note that not a single day passes by without there being news about fatalities due to road accidents in Goa. Youth are losing their lives at a disturbing frequency. A 21-year-old youth from Karaswada, Mapusa died in a self-accident at Bastora early Monday morning. A woman lost her life and her husband and their minor daughter were injured after a scooter rammed into them at Cansaulim. A 70-year-old man died while another rider was injured when their two-wheelers collided with each other in Pissurlem, Sattari. In the years gone by we used to hear about road accidents resulting in injuries to the victims. Incidentally many of the fatalities are a result of self-accidents due to various reasons including over-speeding, negligence, drunken driving, faulty road engineering, potholes on the roads and stray cattle. Precious lives are being lost on a daily basis. It must be considered as a dubious distinction. At this rate Goa could well qualify for the Guinness World Record for the number of fatal road accidents per one lakh population. Unless people are careful while driving and road conditions improve, things could only get worse in future.
