A superb strike by Francis helped Vasco Veterans beat Chinchinim Veterans 1-0 to clinch the Ninth Navelim Inter-village Veterans Football Cup 2023.
Inacio Cardozo of Chinchinim Veterans and Alaric Gomes of Vasco Veterans were in their element in the final. Moving down the left flank, Luis Abranches passed on to Alaric, who in turn, laid the ball in the path for Francis Fernandes to curl in a left-footer past Martin Dias in Chinchinim goal.
Presley Pereira and Inacio Cardozo missed chances to score in the 46th and 48th minutes, respectively. Then, a curling effort by Alaric was pushed away to safety by goalkeeper Martin Dias.
Mariano Dias, AIFF instructor, gave away the prizes in the presence of Avertano Furtado, ex-MLA of Navelim constituency, Edwin Cardozo, ZP member, Micky Rebello of GFDC and Cosme Oliveira, GFA executive committee member, Sr Libia Fernandes, headmistress of Perpetual Convent Succour Convent, Navelim, and club officials.
