Arlem YA drub UC Benaulim 3-1, reach semis

Arlem Youth Association beat United Club of Benaulim 3-1 to move into the semifinals of Varca Panchayat Cup organised by Varca Sports Club on Wednesday.

Eldon Colaco of Arlem was the star of the match with his dribbling and shooting skills while for Benaulim, Keegan Fernandes was at his best. The half-time score was 1-1.

Keegan gave United Club of Benaulim an early lead in the 15th minute, dribbling past an Arlem Youth Association defender to place the ball into the far corner of the net past Francisco Dias. In the 16th minute, Sheehan Fernandes' cross was well-placed into the goal by Eldon to level the scores for Arlem Youth Association.

In the second half, Garrison Fernandes found the net with a powerful shot to give Arlem Youth Association a 2-1 lead. In the 57th minute, Eldon scored his brace to make it 3-1 for Arlem Youth Association. Sheehan Fernandes of Arlem Youth Association received the Man of the Match award.

Carmona move into quarterfinals
Carmona rode their luck to beat Cuncolim and move into the quarterfinals of Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club at Church Ground, Chandor on Wednesday.

Carmona drew the first blood in the 6th minute when Stanford hoodwinked a couple of Cuncolim defenders and beat the goalkeeper with a placement shot. Changing over, Cuncolim scored the equalizer through a solo effort by Daulat Dessai. The match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

In the tiebreaker, Aaren, Bleston and Luke were on target for Carmona while only Dailon could beat Aaren, who saved three kicks from the penalty spot. Aaren Fernandes was named the Man of the match.

St Anthony SC edge past Ambelim SC
St Anthony SC Colva registered a solitary goal victory over Ambelim SC to enter the quarterfinals of the Lourdes Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Ambelim Sports Club at Ambelim ground on Wednesday.

Nash Pinto of Ambelim should have netted in the very third minute but he failed to find the net. Later in the 15th minute, Colva's Cliff Dias sent a powerful shot that hit the crossbar and went out of play. Joston Pereira of St Anthony netted the match-winner in the 38th minute. St Anthony SC Colva will meet the winners of the match between Chandor Cub and St Rock YC Majorda in the quarterfinals on January 30.

Pilar Fathers start hockey centre
Pilar Fathers have started a hockey centre at Honda High School, Sattari with the introduction of a 10-day Pioneer Hockey Coaching Camp. Young coach Brendon Noronha from Ucassaim, who has recently completed his NIS Coaching Degree, will guide the trainees. This is his first assignment but is well-supported by the Hockey Heritage Group Goa, who have assisted Pilar Fathers in their previous two camps at Morlem and Keri (Sattari). Brendon will be joined by coach Gaurav Singh from Mapusa, once he returns with the Goa University team from Gwalior. The camp will have 26 children, 23 of who turned up on day 1.
