FC Goa's captain and defender Odei Onaindia spoke to the media ahead of their important match against Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) this Thursday evening. The team is currently facing challenges, with only one win in their last five matches and struggling to secure victories at home.
Odei said that every season is unique and that adjustments are necessary for the entire team, not just for defenders or goalkeepers. “We have to adjust from the striker to the keeper,” he said. He expressed optimism, stating, “When we get our clean sheet, we will grow, and we will do it.”
Despite the current difficulties, Odei remains hopeful about turning the team’s fortunes around. “I’m not happy because things aren’t going well, but I think we will turn the situation,” he noted. With 19 matches still to play, he believes there is plenty of time for improvement. “We didn’t start in the best way, but I think the team will grow with every game,” he added.
When asked about the team's confidence to overcome recent setbacks, Odei responded, “I think the team is strong, but we have been penalized more than in other years for our mistakes.” He highlighted the importance of securing a clean sheet, saying, “We are getting a lot of chances, and if we keep a clean sheet, we will lead.” He also pointed out that last season's success was partly due to maintaining a strong defense.
Regarding the fans’ concerns about the team's performance compared to last season, Odei acknowledged the need for self-criticism. “Maybe I’m not in the best shape. I have to do more, train more,” he admitted. He remains confident, stating, “I am 100% sure we will be back.”
Looking ahead to the match against Chennaiyin FC, Odei affirmed the team’s determination to show their strength. “This is the game we have to play, and we have to win. We will go there and prove that we have a strong team,” he said.
At the end, Odei said that FC Goa is preparing to face Chennaiyin FC with hope and determination, definitely the upcoming match could be a turning point for the gaurs of FC Goa as they aim to regain their form and climb the ISL table.
