In a thrilling final between Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club, Paroda and Dicarpale Sports Club, the former came out victorious 3-0 via tiebreaker to emerge champions of 16th Guirdolim Village Panchayat inter-village football tournament organized by Guirdolim Club at Church Ground, Chandor.
The match started with the teams playing end-to-end football with both defences stretched to the limit. Whenever the defence was split it was the goalkeepers from both sides who made saves to deny the opposition any scoring chances. For Fr Agnelo, Shrine Clemente hit the woodwork in the 10th minute. In the 15th minute, Mack Borges of Dicarpale drew a full-stretch save from Pravesh Borkar for Paroda. The teams failed to score going into the lemon break.
Changing over, Paroda were slightly dominant and in the 45th minute, a long-range effort by Velroy hit the crossbar. A corner kick for Paroda was headed towards the goal by Omkar Gaunkar but Francisco Colaco, the goalkeeper of Dicarpale was equal to the task and parried the ball away diving low. Good defending by the teams ensured that regulation time ended goalless.
In the tiebreaker, Kanchan Kiro, Velroy Carvalho and Joel Furtado scored for Paroda while Pravesh Borkar, the goalkeeper of Paroda, saved all three penalty kicks of Dicarpale. Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club Paroda were awarded the winners' trophy and a cash prize of Rs 50,000 while Dicarpale had to be content with the runners-up trophy and a cash prize of Rs 40,000.
Earlier club president Patwin Fizardo welcomed, guest of honour Rev Fr Jean Da Cruz presided while chief guest Melissa Alemao, wife of Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao, addressed the gathering and gave away the prizes. Caitano Fernandes, GFA president, Antonio Pango, GFA vice-president (South Goa), GFA executive committee member Ravi Cabral, Prakash Dessai, assistant sales tax officer, Sudesh Bhise, social worker, were present. General secretary Darwin Cardoso proposed the vote of thanks.
