Goa’s rising football talents Pearl Fernandes and Valaina Fernandes have been named in the 23-member Indian squad set to take on Russia in a series of international friendly matches in Sochi on April 11, 14, and 17. The matches will be played at the Matsesta Football Center, with kick-off scheduled for 14:30 IST.
The squad, selected by head coach Pamela Conti, is part of preparations for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026. The Young Tigresses arrived in Sochi on April 6 after a successful exposure tour in Yangon last month, where they registered two wins (2-0 and 3-2). The team had also been training in Bengaluru prior to the tour.
In the upcoming Asian Cup in Suzhou, India will face Australia on May 2, Japan on May 5, and Lebanon on May 8 in Group B.
Pearl Fernandes, who hails from Arambol in North Goa, has been representing Compassion FC over the past two seasons. A standout performer, she has made a strong mark in both junior and senior women’s football, earning her place in the national squad through consistent performances.
Valaina Fernandes, another promising striker from Goa, has rapidly risen through the ranks with her impressive displays. She gained attention during the SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship 2025, making her debut against Nepal on August 20 and scoring her first international goal against Bhutan just four days later. Her performances also earned her a training opportunity with Real Betis in Spain, underlining her growing reputation.
Both players are known for their attacking flair and goal-scoring ability, making them key prospects for the future of Indian women’s football.
Anthony Pango, Senior Vice President of the Goa Football Association, praised the selection of Pearl and Valaina, calling it a proud moment for Goan football. He highlighted their achievement as a reflection of dedication and the strength of grassroots development in the state, while extending his best wishes for their international journey.
