In a potential game-changing transfer within the Indian Super League (ISL), Goa's football luminary, Mandar Rao Dessai, is reportedly in talks for a one-year deal with Chennaiyin FC, signaling a notable departure from his current pivotal role at East Bengal FC.
The speculation comes on the heels of Mandar achieving a significant milestone, becoming only the third player in ISL history to notch up 150 appearances while representing East Bengal FC against North East United FC. Insider sources reveal that Chennaiyin FC, an established ISL franchise, has expressed a keen interest in securing the versatile player, initiating discussions with Mandar for a potential move.
Mandar's football journey has been marked by remarkable achievements and contributions. Beginning his youth career at Dempo SC, he joined FC Goa in 2014 on a loan deal from Dempo SC. His pivotal role in Zico's team in 2015 led to a permanent deal with the Gaurs in 2016. A brief stint with Bengaluru FC during the 2016–17 season saw Mandar lifting the Federation Cup.
The footballer further honed his skills with a training stint at LaLiga side Villarreal CF in Spain. Playing a significant role as a captain, Mandar logged 100 games for FC Goa, adapting to a fullback position under coach Sergio Lobera's tenure from 2017-18. His impact was crucial in FC Goa securing the Hero ISL League Shield in the 2019-20 season.
Mandar's path took a new turn in 2020 when he joined Mumbai City FC. His tenure with the Islanders proved highly successful, clinching the Hero ISL League Shield twice (2020–21 and 2022–23) and earning the Hero ISL championship in the 2020–21 season.
The next chapter in Mandar's career turned in May 2023 when he bid farewell to Mumbai City FC, embracing a new challenge with East Bengal FC under coach Carles Caudrat. Notably, with East Bengal FC, Mandar played a pivotal role in clinching the Super Cup 2022-23 title, ending the club's 12-year quest for a national title.
As per reliable sources, Chennaiyin FC is actively in advanced discussions to secure Mandar Rao Dessai for the upcoming ISL season. However, the player is yet to finalize and confirm the offer from the southern side of Chennaiyin FC. Football fans in India especially in Goa and Chennai eagerly await confirmation.
