Goan beach volleyball pair of Rama Dhawaskar and Aaron Pereira had to settle for a bronze medal at the 36th National Games in Gujarat.
Two Goan teams had made it to the semifinals of the competition played at Dumas Beach, Surat with Goa's Nitin Sawant and Sarvesh Naik also in fray for the gold. However, both Goan teams lost their respective semifinals to Tengana and Andhra Pradesh and had to fight it out for the bronze among themselves in the third place playoff.
In the bronze medal match, Dhawaskar and Pereira beat Sawant and Naik 21-19, 21-14 to secure Goa's third medal at the Games. Telangana won the gold after they beat Andhra Pradesh 22-24, 23-21, 15-11 in the final. With three bronze medals, Goa now lie 30th in the medals tally.
FIFA U-17 WC will lift women's football: Pango
MARGAO: The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is a great opportunity to secure the future of Indian women’s football, Antonio Pango, interim president of Goa Football Association (GFA) has said.
"I think this mega event is very important for the young girls that want to play football in the country. I hope this event will motivate the girls to take a plunge into football," Pango said. The GFA official also had a message for the citizens of India. “I would like to tell everyone that this World Cup needs your support. The players will get even more motivated after receiving support from you. I would like to tell all parents to support women’s football as well. If your children want to play football, then support them in moving forward in the sport,” Pango said.
He appealed to the fans to support the young girls. "I realise that without spectators, we are nothing. So I think their support is essential," Pango said.
Vagator PY march into quarterfinals
MARGAO: Vagator Parish Youth SC got the better of Assonora United FC 4-3 via tiebreaker to enter the quarterfinals of the FC Tuem Champions Trophy 1st inter-village football tournament, organised by FC Tuem in association with CAM Group of Companies at DSYA ground, Tuem, on Sunday.
In the 20th minute, Assonora scored the first goal of the match through the boots of Gaurav Naik. In the 28th minute, Assonora could have doubled their tally but M A Francis’s shot hit the crossbar. Assonora led 1-0 at half time. Post resumption, in the very first minute, Soham Govekar of Vagator scored with a brilliant header.
In the 40th minute of play, M A Francis missed an open chance in front of the goal crossed by Chetan Shirodkar. In the 53rd minute, Mohammad Adur’s header hit the Assonora crossbar. In the dying minutes of the match, Chetan Shirodkar was sent off by referee Jan Rodrigues for his second booking of the match. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the tiebreaker, Vagator Parish Youth scored through C Virnodkar, Alton, Alrich and Nyron, while for Assonora, Vineet, Gaurish and Prajot were on target.
