Known for promoting the sport of hockey in Ambernath, the late Joe Fernandis, played for Goan Sports and the Lusitanians in the 1950s. Uncle Joe, as he was fondly called, also represented the then erstwhile Bombay State in the Nationals. "My dad was very passionate about promoting hockey in Ambernath. He started a hockey tournament to encourage budding talent before he passed away in 2014," said his son Olympian Mervyn Fernandis, who has brought the tournament to the modern astroturf surface in Bandra.
The Joe Fernandis Hockey Tournament is jointly organised by St Peter's Youth Centre, along with Ambernath Hockey Welfare Association (AHWA). Hockey legends Joaquim Carvalho and Mervyn Fernandis provide the technical support.
