MARGAO: Cuncolim Union advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup 2025, defeating Curtorim Gymkhana 2-0 in a match played at the Fr. Druston and Wellington Ground, Cavelossim. The tournament is being organized by the Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim.
The match, marked by several missed chances from both sides, began with Curtorim nearly taking the lead in the 5th minute when Reuben Fernandes set up Anselm inside the box, but the latter's weak attempt was easily collected by Cuncolim goalkeeper Shankar Gaunkar.
Cuncolim responded with an opportunity of their own when Ansh Furtado found himself one-on-one with the keeper, only to trip over the ball, allowing the goalkeeper to clear for an unproductive corner.
The breakthrough came when Vinod Velip, Cuncolim’s prolific striker, combined brilliantly with Melwin Mascarenhas before launching a powerful right-footed shot into the bottom left corner, putting Cuncolim ahead 1-0.
Curtorim pressed for an equaliser, primarily attacking down the left through Elton Mascarenhas, who delivered dangerous crosses into the box. However, Cuncolim defenders Vicky Cardozo and James Fernandes were solid at the back, repeatedly clearing the threat.
With Curtorim pushing high in search of a goal, Wilson Fernandes capitalized on a defensive lapse, beat the offside trap, and calmly slotted home to seal a 2-0 win for Cuncolim Union.
After the match, Fr. Ubaldo Fernandes, Parish Priest of Cavelossim, presented the Food Court Man of the Match award to Vinod Velip in the presence of Viriato Mendes, Vice-Chairman of the organizing club.
