MARGAO
Goa Football Association (GFA) suffered a deep loss on Friday morning with the passing of its senior-most employee, Lourenco Pereira, after a brief illness. He was 46.
Lourenco is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and parents. His funeral cortege will leave from his residence on Saturday at 3:00 PM for a Eucharistic celebration at St Joaquim Chapel, Borda, followed by burial at the Sonsodo cemetery.
Lourenco joined the GFA in 2008 as a clerk at the Margao office, but soon became the backbone of football operations in Salcete. Known for his tireless work ethic, sincerity, and humility, he quietly ensured the smooth organization of GFA matches across South Goa — always willing, never complaining, and ever present.
His passing has left a void in the Goan football community, with tributes pouring in from players, coaches, officials, and clubs.
"Very sad and a big loss for Goa football. May his soul rest in peace," said Derick Pereira, former India U-23 coach.
Lector Mascarenhas, former India midfielder and ex-GFA General Secretary, recalled: “He was completely devoted to his job. It’s hard to find such sincere and hardworking employees today. He will be missed by clubs across South Goa.”
Elvis Gomes, former GFA president, added: “Lawrence was an excellent staff member. His passing is a big loss to the GFA and the entire football fraternity.”
Anthony Vas, a long-time official and match referee, said: “I met Lourenco regularly at the artificial turf in Fatorda. He organized matches with a smile, always helpful and unwavering in his dedication. His loss is heartbreaking.”
Armando Colaco, chief coach of Sporting Clube de Goa, simply said: “May Lourenco’s soul rest in peace.”
Anthony Pango, GFA Senior Vice President, praised his commitment: “He never said no to any task. His sincerity and helpful nature made him a standout presence at the GFA. His demise is a great personal and professional loss.”
Oden D’Costa, president of Sirlim Sports Club, remarked: “Lourenco’s passing feels like a personal loss. He gave everything to football. It will be hard for Goan football to fill the void he leaves behind.”
The Goan Football Team also paid tribute, posting: "We mourn the passing of our dear Lourenco. May his soul rest in peace."
Lourenco Pereira’s quiet service and lasting impact will be remembered by all who worked with him and benefited from his dedication to the sport.
