Goa’s water demand to surge by 20% in next decade, House told

Minister for Water Resources Subhash Shirodkar on Tuesday informed the House that the State's water requirement in the next ten years will increase by almost 20 per cent.

Shirodkar said that as per the information provided by the Department of Drinking Water, the present water requirement of the State for piped water supply including domestic, commercial, industrial etc is 695 MLD.

“The projected water requirement of the State for piped water supply is 834 MLD considering decadal increase in demand of 20 per cent approximately,” the Minister said replying to a question tabled by MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco.

In yet another question, Shirdokar highlighted the various steps taken by the government to enhance and efficiently manage the water resources in the State.

He said that the works of major schemes are in progress to upgrade existing schemes as well as new schemes in North Goa that includes 115 MLD augmentation scheme on Kalna River at Bailpar for Mopa airport and Pernem Taluka and 60 MLD LI Scheme at Dhargal on RBMC of TIP for Tuem in Pernem Taluka.

Shirodkar said that the government will undertake 150MLD Augmentation scheme on Chapora river at Sal and Amthane Tank for 110 MLD Assonora WTP, 5MLD Assagao WTP, 20MLD Porvorim WTP and 20 MLD Pilerne WTP and 15 MLD Scheme at Morlem for Sattari Taluka.

Further, the government has decided to take up eight projects in Mhadei Basin for implementation to store about 9.00 TMC water in coming years.

The Minor Irrigation Dam at Charawane in Sattari Taluka was started in the year 2007 to store 230 Ha-m water at an estimated cost of Rs 15.06 cr, however the project was stalled by the Forest Department, he said.

“The project is under review,” he added.

The consultancy for six dams namely Nirankal, Rivem, Nanoda, Sonal-1, Matojanwada, and Bolkarne (Ragada-III) is in process. Planning and designing of 2 dams Kajumol and Tatodi are in process.
