Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday informed the Goa Legislative Assembly that the process to acquire land for the construction of a new Borim bridge is ongoing.

However, he assured that the government would also assess the structural stability of the existing bridge amid rising safety concerns.

Responding to the issue raised by Congress MLA Altone D’Costa during the Zero Hour, Sawant said that had it not been for public protests, work on the new bridge would have already commenced.

“The process of land acquisition is in progress, but I will instruct officials to examine the strength of the current bridge as well,” the Chief Minister said.

D’Costa highlighted the deteriorating condition of the old Borim Bridge, saying that commuters – especially those using the route from Verna Industrial Estate –fear for their safety.

“The bridge shakes noticeably whenever heavy vehicles pass over it. People are anxious, and the risk of a tragedy cannot be ruled out if no steps are taken,” he warned.

The current Borim Bridge, a vital link connecting South Goa to Ponda and other regions, has long been a subject of concern due to its ageing structure.

The government had earlier announced plans for a new bridge, but progress has been slow, largely attributed to land acquisition hurdles and local opposition.

D’Costa urged the government to take immediate measures to prevent a potential disaster, adding that safety audits and interim repairs must not be delayed any further.
