MARGAO
Wilred Leisure Sports Club entered the finals of the 19th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup after edging past Fr Agnelo Sports and Cultural Club, Paroda, 6-5 via the tie-breaker at the Chandor Church sports complex.
Wilred Leisure SC dominated the early exchanges, with Nalister and Willy Anslem creating several openings in the forward line. Their pressure paid off in the 8th minute when Jovel Martins floated a pass over the Paroda defence for Anslem, who finished neatly to give Wilred the lead.
Wilred came close to doubling their advantage in the 15th minute, but Aliston’s long-range effort struck the crossbar. Fr Agnelo S&C, Paroda gradually found their rhythm with Godwin controlling the midfield and Benzu organising the defence. In the 22nd minute, Godwin produced an individual effort by beating a defender and firing home a powerful shot to restore parity. The remainder of the half was evenly contested, with play concentrated in midfield.
After the break, Paroda pressed harder with Godwin dictating play and attempting long-range shots, but Wilred goalkeeper Johnson Bogota remained alert to deny the attackers. Both teams squandered chances due to poor finishing, and with neither side willing to concede in the closing stages, the match ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
In the tie-breaker, Wilred Leisure SC held their nerve by converting all five of their kicks, while Bogota saved Paroda’s fifth attempt to seal a 6-5 victory and send Wilred into the finals for the second successive year.
Johnson Bogot was adjudged the Player of the Match and received the award from Ivon Pinto, former player of Guirdolim Club.
