Churchill Brothers Sports Club have appointed former Salgaocar FC assistant coach Mario Soares as their assistant coach for the forthcoming domestic season. Soares expressed confidence that his new team will perform to its full potential under head coach Alfred Fernandes and leave a mark in the GFA’s Professional League this season.
Soares, a vastly experienced coach, earned seven caps for the India team. He has also donned the State colours 12 times. Soares believes in hard work and being active on the pitch.
“I played for Dempo Sports Club when the team won the maiden National Football League title. I was also the captain of the Goa team when we won the U-23 National Football Championship in Goa. Hence, I know what effort it takes to come to the top. It will be my endeavour to motivate the players to perform to their best,” Soares stated.
Over a successful playing career, Soares turned out for Salgaocar, Dempo, MRF (now defunct) and Churchill Brothers Sports Club.
“I am very excited to have joined Churchill Brothers and would like to thank the club patron, Churchill Alemao and CEO, Valanka Alemao, for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. Churchill Brothers has been one of the best teams in the country. I had worked under Moroccan Karim Bencherifa, Santosh Kashyap, Emeaka Ezeugo, Peter Rodrigues and Norbert Gonsalves, either at Churchill or Salgaocar FC,” he added.
Having worked with such names, he opined it will not be difficult for him to work with Alfred Fernandes for the success of the Red Machines. “Coaching has undergone a sea change and one must adopt new techniques when imparting coaching. I am confident that Churchill Brothers will put up an impressive show in the new season,” signed off the coach, who holds an AFC ‘B’ Licence.
