MARGAO: 
A pall of gloom descended on the city's cricket fraternity after former Goa Ranji player Rajesh Ghodge died after he collapsed during a cricket match at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Stadium here on Sunday. He was 47 and is survived by wife Dr Rakhee and daughter Seah.
The tragic incident occurred at 2.30 pm while Rajesh was at the non-striker end when he suddenly collapsed on the ground. He was immediately rushed to nearby ESI hospital and as his condition showed signs of deterioration, he was shifted to a city-based hospital, where he was later declared dead.
His mortal remains will be taken to the Margao crematorium from his residence at Davorlim at 12 noon on Monday.
Sources in the know say that Rajesh and other players used to play cricket every Sunday at the MCC ground.
An all-rounder, Ghodge played two Ranji Matches and eight one-dayers. Currently, he played for Curchorem Youth Club in GCA 'A ' League and had scored half centuries in two matches.
Ghodge conducted GCA matches under 16 and 19 cricket league matches at the MCC ground.
As news of his demise spread in the evening, friends and well wishers, besides members of the cricketing fraternity rushed to the private hospital.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabudesai, Councilor Rupesh Mahatme were amongst the many who rushed to the private hospital upon hearing the sad news.
Rupesh told The Goan that Rajesh was his close friend since his school days and had made a mark in the cricketing field over the years. "The news was sad and shocking. We could not believe that Rajesh had collapsed on the ground due to cardiac problem as he was fit," Rupesh added.
