The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) surprise overture to the Congress earlier this week for a pre-poll alliance in Goa ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections throws up a striking contradiction -- in Goa, AAP is urging the Congress to lead a united Opposition front against the BJP; in Punjab, however, the same two parties will face off as bitter rivals in the very same election cycle.
Earlier this week, AAP's State president, Valmiki Naik, urged the Congress to lead a united front, even as the latter was grappling with internal dissent and a leadership churn.
A tale of two States
The logic he proffered was that fragmented Opposition parties cannot hope to dent the BJP’s strength. However, the same election cycle will see Punjab go to the polls, where AAP and the Congress are bitter rivals.
AAP governs Punjab, while the Congress remains its principal challenger, and the prospect of fighting shoulder-to-shoulder in Goa while clashing head-on in Punjab underscores the contradictions of alliance politics.
For the Congress, the dilemma is equally sharp. Accepting AAP’s hand in Goa could strengthen its claim to lead the Opposition bloc here, but it risks facing flak in Punjab, where the party must project itself as the alternative to AAP’s governance.
Whether the two parties can reconcile State-specific rivalries, and whether AAP’s Goa unit, including its two MLAs, Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, can successfully sway its leadership, will decide if this alliance talk matures into a credible front or remains mere political theatre.
