'Smart city' appears to be the catchword of the season, with Mapusa Development Front (MDF) promising to accelerate the pace of development and make Mapusa a 'Smart City' with the support of the government.

MDF’s manifesto for Mapusa city, which it projects as the vision document, was released on Wednesday by Goa Housing Board Chairman and Aldona MLA, Glen Ticlo, in the presence of former chairpersons, Sudhir Kandolkar and Sandeep Falari, and in-charge of the party’s affairs in the civic election, Rupesh Kamat, and some other candidates.

The vision document promises to lay emphasis on e-governance, streamlining and toning up of the municipal administration so as to deliver time-bound civic amenities to the citizens in a transparent manner.

Outlining its road map ahead, MDF said it will facilitate a comprehensive development of the city in a holistic manner and stressed on the State government’s new Mapusa Down Town TCP scheme for extending of the city.

“The Town Planning Scheme for Development of Down Town Mapusa, near Morod (Bodgeshwar Plaza), will result in creation of infrastructures like a state-of-the-art Ravindra Bhavan, multipurpose community hall, integrated school complex, relocation of major government offices, warehousing and transportation hub, parks, gardens, playground, jogging/cycling track, etc,” said Sandeep Falari, former chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).

The Front also said it will ensure smooth co-ordination between various government department/agencies and act as a vehicle of delivering various schemes/proposals of the State and central government to the common man.

“This will not only result in time-bound creation of quality infrastructure but also an improvement in the living conditions of the citizens of Mapusa,” Falari said.

Among many other features mentioned in the manifesto include collection, handling and treatment of wet and dry garbage in a scientific manner, provision of intra-city bus service for the peripheral areas of the town like Cunchelim, Kamarkhazan, etc, taking steps to ease traffic congestion in the city by formulating a traffic management plan, improvement and expansion of road network, drainage, retaining walls, illumination of public streets, road junctions and public areas.

It also mentions the Front’s plan to develop open spaces and tackle the menace of stray dogs and cattle in public places.

The vision document also resolves to implement Master Plan for upgradation of infrastructure in municipal market including augmentation of drainage network, provision of service ducts, fire hydrant network, surveillance network, etc.

Rupesh Kamat mentioned that the campaigning of the candidates was on the right course, and they were confident of securing at least 15 seats, if not more.

To a question, Kamat said the chairperson candidate will be chosen by the elected councillors.

Deputy Chief Minister and Mapusa MLA Francis D’Souza was conspicuous in his absence.
