Chennai: Opposition DMK on Wednesday described as “unprecedented” the Income Tax searches carried out at the residence of Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary P Ramamohana Rao and sought his removal by the state government.
“Income Tax authorities have carried out searches at the house of Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary. This is unprecedented in Tamil Nadu's political history,” DMK Treasurer MK Stalin said in a statement.
Later, speaking to reporters, he said the matter has brought 'disrepute' to the state.
“The Chief Secretary has to quit immediately. Else Chief Minister (O Panneerselvam) himself should intervene and appoint a new Chief Secretary. That is the duty of the government,” Stalin, also state Opposition Leader, demanded.
CPI(M)'s state unit said Rao has “lost the qualification” to continue as Chief Secretary following I-T authorities conducting searches at his premises.
“Therefore, Tamil Nadu government should immediately relieve Rama Mohan Rao from the post of Chief Secretary,” CPI (M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan said.
