While the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) and the Centre are busy pointing fingers at each other over the Chikungunya crisis, the number of sick and infected keep on rising. So far, the disease has claimed 12 lives and the current number of infected cases has crossed 1000.
But what has the AAP government been doing about it? The first thing they did was to blame the media for creating a hype around the issue, saying that this wasn’t an epidemic. But the numbers tell a different story. The health minister has just returned to Delhi and CM Arvind Kejriwal is not in Delhi either. AAP has been busy campaigning in Goa and Punjab but they have managed to seriously neglect the one government that they have been elected to. With elections in the two states around the corner, they have been concentrating their efforts on securing seats there. But, they have left Delhi to its own devices, certainly not the best move for a new party. If they do not contain and manage this situation better, then they will have dug themselves into too large a hole to climb out of and all their progress in Punjab and Goa can be written off.
