A plan by Uber to start two-wheeler taxis in Bengaluru should give local taxi operators, popularly known as ‘pilots’, something to smile about. For a long time now Goa has been the only State in the country to have black and yellow two-wheeler taxis.
Uber’s decision was driven by the fact that the Karnataka capital is highly congested and two-wheelers will be able to zip through traffic. Once it starts, Bengaluru will become the second city in the world after Bangkok to have Uber two-wheeler taxis. If it worked for Goa and Bangkok it should work for Bengaluru. But much depends on the levels of pollution of the roads because two wheeler riders tend to face the worst of almost everything. The project, by the way, will be launched on a ‘pilot’ basis.
