The odd-even scheme may make matters ‘worse’ for many Delhiites, as a recent survey showed that a large percentage of residents in the capital city were completely wary of using autorickshaws and taxis post 9pm. Over 45 percent of 3,035 residents of Delhi, who were part of the survey conducted by a local NGO, stated that they found these forms of public transport unsafe. The Delhi metro though, was considered safe by almost 80 percent of both male and female survey participants.
Delhi hasn’t been getting a great reputation for being a safe city, even before the infamous gang rape case of December 2012. More than three years later there are still a great number of incidents that occur in Delhi at all hours, but mostly in the night. One in every 11 incidents in Delhi is supposed to be a sexual harassment case. What makes matters worse is that only 10 to 12 percent of sexual harassment and other similar cases are reported.
Delhi is the capital of India and a city where a man like Arvind Kejriwal wants to create a model standard of governance. If it has to become that, it has to move beyond just curbing issues of water supply, garbage management and others. It also has to set an example when it comes to protecting the country’s women.
