The people who create and perform on floats during Carnival in Goa have been now been given a financial boost. This comes in the form of a competition of sorts, a project sponsored by the European Commission, which is aimed at an exchange of ideas across the UK, South Africa and Goa in India.
For a long time now, the biggest constraint organisers and float makers during Carnival have had was financial. This could change things. The project will require contestants to submit concepts, designs and other specifications which will be shortlisted and selected by a panel. Dancers and other performers will also be involved in a different competition. There is even talk of selected contestants getting a chance to visit the UK and South Africa.
This will surely boost people involved in the annual Carnival preparations and will also uplift creativity during the festival. Since the government of Goa is keen on turning the Carnival into a destination event, a project like this is an immense advantage.
For the past three years, the government has been banking on the Carnival to help bring tourists to Goa for the weekend at that time of year. But, there have been fundamental issues within organising committees, especially in Panaji. This project and other ideas like it will only serve to let Carnival and everything that happens around it get better over the years.
