Despite instructions, advice and several warnings, people still continue to throw the garbage by the roadside and in the water-bodies.
The large amount of garbage strewn along the roadside and garbage bags floating in the water-bodies bear witness to this. It appears that much of the garbage is disposed in this manner under the cover of darkness.
People could be carrying the garbage bags in their vehicles and dump it in the water bodies and along the side of the road where there are no streetlights. This needs to stop if we are to make Goa garbage free. People need to be dissuaded to dispose the garbage they produce at home in an improper manner. One way to go about with this task would be for the civic bodies and panchayats to have designated areas for dumping garbage in their respective areas.
The government could do likewise along the highway. Wire mesh enclosures could be put up at these designated garbage collection points along the roadside where the citizens can deposit the garbage. It would be desirable to have two separate enclosures at each collection point for dry and wet waste. The authorities concerned should then see to it that the waste from these enclosures is sent to garbage treatment plant on a regular basis.
