Hawa Singh Yadav is a real life hero. He who single-handedly battled a Jat mob in Haryana and saved the bank branch he was guarding from being looted. It is reported that he saved the bank Rs 100 crore in cash and jewellery and what one would have wanted to read is a reward given to this man for firmly standing between a mob and the bank. He fired his gun several times, took down a few Jats, braved a cylinder blast and petrol bombs. He would have died if not for his relatives who infiltrated the mob and extricated him by using a clever ruse. Hawa Singh accomplished all this with a pacemaker in his chest and was in the ICU for 12 days following the incident. Now he is understandably too tired to return back and his only wish is that one of his sons be given a job in his placed. Hawa Singh, is no ordinary man. He served in army, participated in Operation Bluestar and fought against the LTTE in Sri Lanka. He could have run away at the first sight of the mob, but he chose to stay. The larger question, is what will he get for putting his life at risk to save over Rs 100 crore? Supreme dedication to one’s duty cannot be quantified, but if sportspersons can get much more for doing much less, surely Hawa Singh’s Rambo-style fightback needs to acknowledged and rewarded.
