The advent of the monsoons has led to water-logging in many parts of Goa’s commercial capital and also in several areas in its suburbs. The abject failure of the Margao Municipal Council is evident here, as the pre-monsoon works have clearly not been executed in an assiduous manner. The pre-monsoon showers did portend doom for Margao’s drains, as many of them were visibly choked. The citizens too seem lackadaisical in maintaining civic sense and often dump their garbage in drains. The Municipal Council is now taking the defence of non-availability of vehicles to pick up the garbage from the drains. The same percolated again into the drains, and the flow of the monsoon waters has been impeded. The irony is that for the past two and half years, the Margao Municipality is headed by a woman who has studied medicine. She certainly knows the importance of sanitation. But unfortunately, Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai seems to be content in playing second fiddle to whatever her political supremo and TCP Minister Vijay Sardesai says. She should also focus on the town’s problems, lest the citizens be forced to call upon Sardesai to replace the inept and incompetent Chairperson.
