Headley confessed that Lashkar planned the Mumbai attack and that the same group of terrorists had made several abortive attempts to strike the city in September and October 2008. With this deposition, Pakistan is not going to hand over Rehman Lakhvi and Hafeez Saeed to India. At the most there may be a few arrests reflecting Islamabad’s knee-jerk response and
in another scenario, the courts may take over the case, which again will lead nowhere.
It is but obvious that India’s consistent stand about Pakistan’s involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks has found further credence. The deposition will generate a lot of heat within
legal and political circles back home, but the moot question still remains: What will India achieve post this disclosure?
India is most likely to disengage with any confidence building
measures with Pakistan till the dust settles down. With all the
Headley talk, there will be virtually no gain for India in terms
of bringing the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice.
