Even as the Southwest monsoon spreads across Central and North India, it has ravaged several parts in the north east. Gujarat too has borne the brunt of unceasing heavy rain that has affected thousands.
In response to this devastation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office released Rs 500 crore in assistance immediately. Assam too has seen millions being affected by the recent floods which has also taken 77 lives, much more deadlier than Gujarat, but the Centre has not yet decided to disperse the financial assistance it has been crying out for. In Gujarat, the government is offering Rs 2 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. PM Modi even went to the extent of undertaking an aerial inspection of his home state. In sharp contrast to Gujarat, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been requesting the Centre to release flood relief funds as soon as possible as the death toll continues to rise.
From a common man's perspective, Modi's assistance to Gujarat clearly shows his soft corner for the state but isn't Assam a region which also needs humanitarian aid? When the PM projects India as one country, calling it the world's largest democracy, there should be equal and right treatment for each and every state at least during times of emergency.
