Cow vigilantes have become more active and alert in the country than the police has ever been towards crime. Another incident that has come to light is where a man was thrashed by a mob in Nagpur on the suspicion of carrying beef. The victim, Salim Shah, was severely injured and has become one of many victims of cow vigilantes across the country. rPrime Minister Narendra Modi recently made his stand very clear concerning these grim incidents where victims either end up dead or severely injured. He firmly stated in Delhi that government will not tolerate such instances, even as one person was beaten to death in Jharkhand moments after he spoke. Even Amit Shah who was recently asked what the government has done to control the situation, confidently said, show me one incident where the culprits have not been arrested. rTaking Shah by his word, we assume all such cow vigilantes have been arrested, but the question that still remains unanswered is this: Have such arrests made any impact? Will the government be bystanders to crime and intervene only when the crime is committed? Does this government have no responsibility towards such communal flare-ups? The PM has assured the people of safety in these harsh times. On the ground, however, a different picture emerges.
