The killings in San Bernardino have left a lot of question marks, mostly with regard to motivation. Investigators have figured out where the guns were sourced and other things but what exactly prompted the couple to kill 14 people in cold blood is still a mystery, one that became murkier when the official Islamic State radio station called the couple their ‘supporters.’ This has now led to investigators treating this as a terror incident.
Islamic State usually, when claiming responsibility, calls the perpetrators ‘knights’ or ‘soldiers’, so ‘supporters’ seems like a level down. But, when IS speaks everyone stands up and takes notice. With President Obama now going to reaffirm the nation’s dedication to eradicating IS from the face of the earth, the war on terror has taken a new turn. In America and In Europe, IS has found an easy way to get attention. There is no real need to smuggle in explosives or anything worse. Guns are easily available, especially in America. A couple of shooters can cause serious damage and wreck a community.
To find a solution to this threat is not going to be easy, but if America becomes an active member of the team to fight against Islamic State, they will not just be putting their hat in the ring but bringing a serious amount of intelligence equipment and facilities with them.
However, protecting their homeland from threats like the one in San Bernardino will require much more than just all out warfare.
