The Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim finds itself in a strange situation. It claims that it does not have a water problem and yet, it has one. It started out with one bore well and is now dependent on water tankers from the PWD, about 14 each day. So it has water, but the problem lies with distribution. It is plagued by pumping issues but more
importantly, it has to provide water to nearly 10,000 people each day and this can be a daunting task. The hospital has 3,200 staff members and it receives nearly 1,500 at the OPDs each day besides the thousands of patients and family members present on this vast complex. One would expect it to have some sort of problem or the other. But then, if larger hospitals
can sort out similar matters through better management and
proper resource allocation, surely the GMC can do better. However,
for that to happen, it requires support from the government
but without political interference. The GMC is sufficiently
staffed, but unless the incompetent ones are weeded out or
made to do their jobs, efficiency will suffer.
