As Qatar returns to normalcy, Goans plan São João festival on July 3

DOHA

With life gradually returning to normal in Qatar, the Goan community is set to celebrate the São João festival with traditional fervour in Doha on July 3 at 6.30 PM.

The celebrations were initially scheduled for June 27 but were cancelled in light of tensions and in a gesture of solidarity.

Now, with the situation stabilizing and peace prevailing, the community has decided to revive this much-loved festival.

“The earlier cancellation was not an easy decision, and we deeply regret any disappointment caused. But your understanding, patience, continued encouragement and unwavering support reminded us of the beautiful spirit that binds us as a community,” said Filomeno Alves, President, Goan Welfare Association Revival Team.

“Let us now come together ” with joy in our hearts ” to celebrate our traditions and make this São João one to cherish. Together, let’s smile, be joyful, and in a spirit of fellowship and gratitude, give thanks for the blessings we share,” he added.

Goans in Qatar are expected to don colourful outfits, wear floral headgear (known locally as kopel), and indulge in a feast of authentic Goan delicacies, most of which will be lovingly prepared at home by families.

“A number of games will be organised for participants of all ages, and plenty of prizes will be given away,” said Leroy D’Costa

“It promises to be an evening full of fun, games, traditional Goan food, and family-oriented entertainment,” he concluded.

The São João festival holds a special place in Goan culture, symbolizing joy, thanksgiving, and community spirit ” and this year’s celebration is expected to be a memorable one for all who attend.

Last year, over 150 people attended the São João festival celebrations, which included guests from Japan, South Africa, Croatia and Indonesia, all who are based in Qatar.

The European, Asian and African guests were the special invitees at the event, and they experienced Goan hospitality and the vibrant spirit of the community and its culture at the colourful event.
