Goan Association of New York hosts annual picnic

NEW YORK

The Goan Association of New York brought together community, culture, and camaraderie at its much-awaited Annual Picnic at the scenic Valley Stream State Park on August 2 at 10.30 am.

The park came alive with the vibrant spirit of Goa as members and families turned out in great numbers, making it a very well-attended fun event.

The day kicked off with a traditional march to the beats of DJ Mickey, whose energetic music had everyone tapping their feet and set the perfect festive mood for the entire day. DJ Evette also entertained with some live singing and music.

Goan Association New York President Melba de Corla Souza welcomed all attendees and in her address, thanked the community for their presence. She extended heartfelt gratitude to the committee members for their hard work and dedication in making the event a grand success.

Keeping the event lively and flowing seamlessly was Master of Ceremonies, Ralph Dias, whose wit and charm kept the crowd engaged throughout.

A wide array of appetisers, main courses, and desserts were brought in by the guests – a potluck showcasing Goan hospitality at its best. Flavour of the day was Sorpotel especially prepared by Clara Fernandes, Mario de Corla Souza and committee members. The food coordination was handled by Emirita Desouza, Avril D'Costa, Lynn Dias, Sandra Stevens and Sasha Dias, ensuring everyone was well-fed and happy. Other committee members Marilyn Pinto and Wilma Pinto helped in coordinating the day’s events.

There was no shortage of fun and games. Everett and Michele D’Souza planned and organised entertaining games for all ages, assisted by Deby Couto and Rosy Rustomji which brought out laughter and friendly competition.

The Housie session created great excitement with fantastic prizes. The celebration was made even more melodious with impromptu singing from talented members of the community.

Sports enthusiasts made full use of the beautiful outdoors, with guests enjoying spirited games of volleyball, badminton, and pickleball.

“The picnic was a wonderful reminder of the strong bond that unites Goans in New York – filled with good food, great music, laughter, and the warmth of family,” said Melba de Corla Souza.

“The Goan Association of New York thanks all who attended especially our new members and contributed toward making the picnic a memorable success and keeping the Goenkarponn alive in New York.”
