Joel Alex Mendonsa said he was the only Goan among the volunteers, as he joined fellow Indians from other states in assisting thousands of youth pilgrims during this historic gathering.
“It’s a blessing to serve and be part of such a global spiritual celebration at the heart of the Catholic faith,” said Joel.
The event, which commenced on July 28 and concluded on August 3, drew young people from across the globe to serve and celebrate their faith. The Jubilee of Youth attracted significant participation, highlighting unity, service, and faith among Catholic youth worldwide.
Besides working as a freelance musician, Joel said he also serves as youth representative in the Catholic Association of Goa (CAG) and joint secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council at the Arambol Church.
Joel said he had got the opportunity to become a volunteer when he came across a call for volunteers through official Vatican communication and youth networks.
“I applied online, shared my willingness to serve, and was blessed to be selected. Being the only Goan volunteering here is a special honour for me,” said Joel.
“I travelled to Rome on July 28 and will return to Goa on August 12 on completion of my volunteer work and a short pilgrimage following the Jubilee of Youth.”
Asked what his responsibilities as a volunteer in the Vatican had been, Joel replied: “I helped to guide and assist thousands of young pilgrims, supporting event logistics, giving directions, and coordinating with teams at different venues. It was about making sure the experience for every participant went smoothly.”
Joel admitted that his experience in the Vatican been unforgettable and memorable.
“Serving at the heart of the Catholic Church has been incredible. There is a strong spirit of unity and faith here. Meeting people from around the world, sharing experiences, and working with volunteers from different cultures has been deeply enriching,” said Joel.
“It was inspiring to see so many young people eager to serve as youth volunteers. Despite coming from different countries and backgrounds, we were united by our faith. We learnt from each other, shared stories, and built friendships that went beyond borders.”
In his message to the youth in Goa, Joel encouraged the young people to take up opportunities to serve, “whether in the Church, community, or society at large.”
“Volunteering opens your heart and mind, gives you a deeper understanding of faith, and changes your perspective on life. It’s truly a life-changing experience,” said Joel.
“Goan youth can contribute significantly on global platforms of faith and service.”
