LONDON
Jose Piedade Fernandes, who was elected elected as councillor of Thornton Heath Ward at the London Borough of Croydon in Greater London, has been appointed on a number of committees in the council.
When contacted, Fernandes said he had been appointed as member on the Planning Committee, Licencing Committee, Audit and Governance Committee as reserves, Scrutiny and Overview Committee as reserves and the British Army Squadron committee for ceremonial roles.
“I will also try my best to resolve if any issues raised by the Goan community at large in the area,” he said.
Born in Curtorim and having grown up in Sao Jose De Areal in Salcete, Goa, Fernandes worked for the perfume industry in Bahrain from 1993 to 2001.
During his stay in Bahrain, he was well-known among the Goan community and had actively associated with the Young Goans Club of Bahrain, serving on its committee as Treasurer.
While in pursuit of better career opportunities, Jose migrated to Portugal in 2002 and worked with a chain of restaurants. He then moved to New York, where he worked and gained experience in the banking and apparel industries for three years.
A commerce graduate with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (INTL) (UK), LLM(INTL) (UK) Construction laws and Part ACCA (UK), Fernandes has been working in London as management accountant since 2006. He is also currently serving as Parent Governor at a secondary school in Croydon.
Fernandes then decided to contest the recent council elections from Thornton Heath Ward as the Labour and Cooperative Party candidate and secured the highest number of 1698 votes.
