Music, dance, culinary skills and embroidery were showcased online as the St Michael's Church Sharjah Goan community celebrated the World Goa Day 2022 on October 3.
“This is the second time we have participated in the WGD, the first being in 2021. Initially, we had planned to have a live event in September-October, but could not do it without getting all approvals, so we decided to have an online event,” said Xavier Azavedo, president and coordinator of the St Michael Sharjah Goan Community.
“As soon as Covid restrictions were relaxed, most of the Goans and expatriates in the UAE went on their holidays to Goa and India. As a result, getting everything done was quite a task. We could get videos from only a few families who were still in Sharjah, but we have many hidden Goan talents in the UAE.”
Azavedo said all videos were filmed in and around Sharjah, which also captured the beauty of the city, while the video ended with a few important sites of Sharjah and Dubai.
The video consisted of dances by Sheena Da Cunha (Hula Hoop Contemporary), Nerissa Fernandes, Celina D’Costa, Mevina Pearl D’Costa and Avrel Nelida Fernandes (Konkani Amch Raj Bhas) and Anthony Fernandes, Gosavio Fernandes and Sherwyn Fernandes (Goan Kunbi Folk Dance).
Music was also presented by Lyle Nathan Fernandes (Sweet Child of Mine on drums), Felton Fernandes and acting by Felton Fernandes and Rachel Rodrigues (Sorga Rajeant), Felton and Priya Fernandes (Mummy Maka Vengent Tuje Dhor) and Felton Fernandes (Claudia).
Besides, a recipe on ‘Ambadeancho Ros’ was presented by Fitzroy Fernandes, while Clarissa Martins demonstrated embroidery.
The WGD 2022 was organised by Lazio Fernandes, Marionette Mendes and Xavier Azavedo along with the St Michael's Church Sharjah Goan committee.
