PANAJI: The Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) released a new Konkani book titled Satvik Vichearanchi Ek Ganthonn at the Our Lady of Assumption Church Hall in Velsao. The book, a collection of essays in Romi Konkani by Fr. Eusebio Gomes, was launched by Mr. Nevil Alphonso, former Director of Agriculture, Government of Goa. Present for the occasion were DKA President Celso Fernandes, Vice-President William Fernandes, Secretary Fr. Myron Barreto, former President Vincy Quadros, and the author himself, Fr. Eusebio Gomes. Fr. Myron welcomed the audience and spoke about the importance of reading for both personal and shared knowledge. He said, “Books are treasures of life experiences that can enlighten generations.”
Talking about the book, Vincy Quadros said, “Satvik Vichearanchi Ek Ganthonn” is an anthology of 33 essays categorized under educational, social, historical, political, and religious themes. The book is dedicated to Florian Vaz of Gogol, Margao, who lost his life during the Konkani Language Movement.
Chief Guest Nevil Alphonso praised Fr. Eusebio’s work in Romi Konkani literature and highlighted the need to promote the language. “Languages and scripts fade if neglected,” he warned. He added, “Romi Konkani must find its place on digital platforms to resonate with younger generations. We need podcasts, YouTube channels, short films, and holiday certificate courses to showcase its richness.” He also suggested setting up a youth wing to lead this effort.
Fr. Eusebio shared the background of his book, saying, “These 33 essays were originally published in Gulab, Amcho Avaz, The Goan Review, and Vauraddeancho Ixtt. This year marks 33 years of my priesthood, and these essays symbolise that journey. My love for Konkani was nurtured in my mother’s lap – my first word was ‘Maim.’ I was deeply influenced by works like Bishop Fulton Sheen’s The Life of Christ and Pope Benedict XVI’s Jesus of Nazareth.”
