PANAJI: Comrade Christopher Fonseca has been elected as the new State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Goa. The election took place during the party’s 19th State Conference held on August 3. Comrade Suhas Naik was elected as Deputy Secretary and Comrade Rajendra Verenkar as Treasurer.

The conference was inaugurated by CPI National Secretary Dr Balchandra Kango and veteran communist Prof Anand Mendse.

In their addresses, both leaders highlighted the challenges faced by the working class and criticised corporate influence, unemployment, and the weakening of democratic institutions.

Delegates adopted seven resolutions, including calls for a ceasefire in Palestine, abolition of contract labour in government departments, improved minimum wages, and measures to tackle inflation and unemployment. In his address, Fonseca said inflation and wage stagnation are deepening inequality and worsening conditions for the working class globally.
