South Goa district hospital has finally got the much-awaited MRI facility, with PWD Minister Digambar Kamat saying the facility will go a long way in mitigating the hardships faced by the people of South Goa.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Monday launched the facility at the hospital in the presence of South Goa district hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rajendra Borkar and team of officials.

Located on the ground floor of the hospital building near the Radiology Department, sources told The Goan that the team of doctors and staff, who had undergone training at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, has started conducting trial runs of the MRI facility.

“It will take some days before the facility is thrown open for members of the public. Citizens need no longer head to the GMC, Bambolim or private centres to avail the MRI facility,” sources said.

Meanwhile, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat told the media at the weekly darbar that the MRI facility will further upgrade the facilities at the South Goa district hospital. “I had raised the matter with both Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. I am confident that the government will further upgrade the facilities at the South Goa district hospital in the coming months,” he added.

Kamat further informed that the Health Minister has drawn up plans to set up a cardio and trauma units at the South Goa district hospital.

He said the Health Minister, who also holds the Urban Development portfolio, will soon visit Margao to lay the foundation stone for the multi-level parking lot and the refurbishment of the Margao municipal heritage building.
