PANAJI: Shirin M Pai, a research professor of politics and international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies and a Fellow of the British Academy, will discuss her book Depletion: The Human Cost of Caring on December 17 at 6 pm.
The event will be held at the International Centre Goa as part of the Kitaab: Books in Discussion series. Shirin has written several books, including Performing Representation, which looks at women MPs in the Indian Parliament, the OUP Handbook of Politics, and Performance and Indian Debates on the International Left.
In her latest book, she studies the human cost of care work and how it affects people across class, race, gender, and generations. The book also looks at the burden of commuting, unpaid work done by women, and household work carried out by children.
Shirin argues that these hidden costs must be recognised so they can be reduced and reorganised for a fairer future.
