'A History of Printmaking in India' exhibition opens in Assagao today

PANAJI

Bobby's Art Goa has organised an exhibition titled 'A History of Printmaking in India', showcasing maps, lithographs, woodcuts, serigraphs & more, from the 1800s until 2000.  The exhibition runs from December 18 till January 4, from 12 pm to 8 pm everyday, at the gallery in Assagao.  The history of printmaking in India begins in Goa with the arrival of the first movable-type printing press in 1556, gradually evolving from a tool of colonial administration and missionary work into a powerful medium of mass communication, popular imagery, political expression, and fine art.  From early woodblock illustrations and the spread of printing along India’s coasts, to the rise of popular prints, chromolithographs, and the influential presses of Chitrashala and Raja Ravi Varma, printmaking shaped visual culture across social classes. During the freedom movement it became a vehicle for nationalism, and in the twentieth century, institutions like Kala Bhavan at Santiniketan transformed it into a recognised fine art practice.
