The Sankhali Municipal Council (SMC) has decided to provide free 500-litre water tanks to each house and 5,000-litre water tanks to buildings in the municipality before Ganesh Chaturthi.
SMC Chairperson Raya Parsekar and Councillor Dharmesh Saglani informed reporters that this decision was taken at a council meeting on Thursday.
“There have been frequent water supply problems in Sankhali. There are regular power cuts to Padoshe, and the Sankhali Water Treatment Plant does not have a generator,” said Parsekar.
“In a bid to resolve this issue to some extent, the SMC has decided to purchase water tanks through government grants and distribute these tanks to each house before Ganesh Chaturthi.”
Saglani and Parsekar have requested government authorities to consider the SMC resolution on priority.
The SMC has also decided to launch an animal rescue helpline in Sankhali to avoid road mishaps on streets and to provide assistance to injured animals.
“A four-member team will be made available to monitor calls for assistance to animals, while a veterinary doctor will be also made available to treat the animals,” said Saglani.
The SMC has also decided to have the Ganesh Chaturthi Bazaar at various places in Sankhali to avoid a rush and facilitate social distancing at the different locations.
