Citizens and taxpayers of Margao upped the ante against Margao Municipal Council’s proposed hike in taxes and fees when they called on Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai with a plea for a rollback of the taxes.
The Fatorda MLA termed the hike as unprecedented, insisting that the Council should first complete the survey of the 45 per cent unlicensed premises and withhold the hike.
The delegation comprising of Arch Carlos Gracias, Clifford Dias, Lalan Parsekar, Sujata Parsekar, Lincoln Gomes, Aziz Shah, Jose Maria Miranda, Damodar Onskar, Robert Vaz, Aneil Alvares, Anwar Naroo and Domnic Coutinho presented a six-point note to Sardesai citing the reasons why the steep hike needs to be withdrawn or withheld.
Sardesai also pointed out the gross anomalies in the public notice notifying the rates, and said that if the government doesn’t announce its decision on this matter then he would raise it in the ensuing assembly session through a Calling Attention motion or during the Governor’s address.
